Aurora, IL. – Aurora resident, Stacey Montgomery is changing the face of face of greeting cards, literally. A lack of variety in multicultural cards inspired Montgomery to start Stacey M Design whose target market originally was African Americans because most cards she saw featured people exclusively with light skin.
“Stores typically offered a small section of cards featuring African Americans, but all the styles were very similar and serious, not at all a reflection of my personality; I like cute, fun things, things that are not so serious, I was filling a gap in the market“ said Montgomery. She then expanded her products to include more than 60 characters with a variety of skin tones, hair colors, styles and accessories.
“This is simply a reflection of society,” said Montgomery.” She continued, “Kids now have friends from all cultures, races and ethnicities. There are also adoptions across cultures and I want every kid to have a card that looks like him or her.”
Montgomery’s holiday cards are sold at select Target stores nationwide and her entire line is sold online at staceymdesign.com as well as in many gift boutiques across the country. Stacey’s next move is licensing her characters so that her multicultural artwork can appear to a wider variety of products and reach a larger audience. “All children should be able to have a familiar face on their invitations, thank you cards and anything else that celebrates their individuality” she concluded.
