Do plan ahead. Mail the invitations as early as possible-- at least 3 weeks in advance. This will give guests ample time to arrange schedules accordingly.
Do take into account the personality of the mother-to-be. Some women will enjoy the traditional "girls only" shower with all the typical games. Others will prefer a coed. If you shower is during warm weather, consider having a barbecue.
Do get organized. If necessary enlist the help of friends to share duties.
Do consider including men. While the traditional all-female party is still popular, coed showers are becoming more popular, recognizing that the father as an integral part of the process and that both mother and father have male friends that would enjoy celebrating the impending arrival. If you do invite men, make sure you include activities that are appropriate for both men and women.
Do have many decorations. The more balloons the better!! Decorations set a fun atmosphere and create a more dynamic background for the photographs you will take. Many party stores offer a wide range of decorations for baby showers. Be creative. Often homemade decorations are more fun than store bought!!
Do have a theme. If the mother has decided on the theme for the baby's room, e.g. a Disney character, teddy bears, Looney Tunes, Peter the Rabbit, Mickey Mouse, etc., make that the theme.
Each guest is asked to bring an inexpensive children's book as an add-on gift. Everyone will enjoy sharing memories of their favorite childhood story, while starting a library for the baby.
Do know the diet restrictions of the mother-to-be. Pregnant women should not drink alcoholic beverages. They should also stay away from spicy food, foods high in sodium, and caffeine. Foods that contain caffeine include coffee, tea, colas and chocolate. So, avoid serving chocolate cake.
If the shower is in early afternoon, serve sandwiches. Use baby-themed cookie cutters or heart-shaped cutters to make the sandwiches in cute shapes.
Do take lots of pictures. Look for baby shower-themed disposable cameras.
During the course of the shower, have each guest decorate a scrapbook page with memories, words of encouragement, stickers, etc., leaving room for a picture. Make sure pictures are taken of each guest. After pictures are developed, make a scrapbook out of all the pages and present to mother-to-be.
Do give away prizes that people will actually enjoy receiving.
Don't play games that are embarrassing or awkward for the guests. Remember, if the shower is coed, men may not enjoy some of the traditional shower games. Be creative.
